Eco-friendly Auto Repair by Ace Abbey
Auto repair and preventative maintenance such as fluid changes must be done when needed in order to maintain your automobile. A vehicle that’s not well maintained will not run as efficiently so will waste fossil fuel. Dirty oil or inadequate amounts can clog up the works or blow up the engine. Once an engine has been deemed unfixable, guess where it goes? To the landfill which is one more strike against Mother Earth. There are some things to think about regarding green car repair tactics.
- Reuse: Keeping an existing car that has been well taken care of with regular auto repair is an example of reusing what we already have. Why go out and buy the latest model when the one you have will work just fine if it’s properly tended to?
- Recycle: If you do need another vehicle, consider purchasing a previously owned automobile. If someone else didn’t want it anymore, you could recycle it by buying it and making it your mode of transportation.
- Watch your speed: Speeding down the road might be exciting but it’s not good for your car or the planet. Cars that are driven by madmen or lead footed women will break down faster. They’ll also burn more gasoline and lubricants which means a heavier carbon footprint because of a lead foot on the accelerator.
- Green filters: There are some filters that are considered “green” because they are more environmentally friendly. These devices are made to extend the life of the oil and are sometimes referred to as extended performance filters. These are canisters called “micro-greens” that have bypass filters on them. The idea is that the engine running will clean the oil.
- Engine cleaners: There are anti-oxidants and detergents that can be added to lubricants. This will keep everything running more efficiently.
- Recycle all fluids properly: Whether it’s motor oil, antifreeze or the gunk that came out of the radiator, all of these fluids must be recycled or disposed of correctly. Local automotive shops often have recycling and disposal centers on their premises that will take care of this stuff for free. Draining the old fluids into sealed containers such as water jugs or milk gallon bottles with plastic lids will make transporting them easy and tidy. Individuals who just dump these fluids into the ground, the trashcan or the creek will be polluting the planet’s ground and waterways for generations to come.
- Ride a bike or walk when possible: To cut down on fuel consumption and to keep vehicles on the road as long as possible, humans should take a break from their autos occasionally. Riding a bike, walking around town, to work or school will not only be good for the planet, it will be good for bodies and moods.
There are ways to get auto repair and preventative maintenance tasks done that are earthy-friendly. All it takes is a bit of forethought and a higher level of awareness to reuse, recycle, slow down, use eco-friendly filters and products, to park the sedan once in a while and walk or ride your bicycle.
